An investigation involving the WA Police Proceeds of Crime Meth Money Team and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission has resulted in the seizure of about $1.6 million cash.

Officers stopped a hire car in the Perth central business district about 6.45pm on Tuesday August 22.

A search of the vehicle uncovered two suitcases which contained about $1.6 million in Australian currency. Two Victorian men, aged 29 and 33, were interviewed by officers and charged with the following:

A 29-year-old man from Carnegie, Victoria, was charged with one count of unlawful possession of money;
A 33-year-old man from Vermont South, Victoria, was charged with unlawful possession of money.

Both men appeared in the Perth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday August 23 and were remanded in custody. They are due to re-appear in court on August 30.

“We actively target meth dealers in our community and the profits that they make without concern for the damage they cause, and these efforts resulted in this significant seizure,” Serious and Organised Crime Detective Inspector Shaun Miller said.

Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission Western Australia State Manager Doug Miller said this is a strong example of the close working relationship between the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission and our state and territory police partners.

“Together we have prevented the diversion of millions of dollars away from the legitimate economy,” Mr Miller said.

A joint investigation involving the WA Police Organised Crime Squad and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission has resulted in the seizure of $1.64 million cash and more than 200g of methylamphetamine.

The investigation culminated in a search warrant at a home on Cape Street, Yokine, on Tuesday morning.

Officers found large quantities of cash in boxes and bags throughout the house and in a car that was parked inside a garage at the property.

Further to this, officers found three packages containing 207.8g of methylamphetamine.

“Our ongoing efforts to target those people involved in the illicit drug trade is making it harder for them to conceal their activities and move their money around.

“The working relationships between state and national authorities have never been stronger, and we will continue to work together to identify, disrupt and dismantle criminal networks that attempt to operate in Australia.”

Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission Western Australia State Manager Doug Miller said this operation is a strong example of law enforcement agencies working together to target criminal enterprises.

“We are committed to working with our partners to discover, understand and respond to serious and organised crime. These results are significant—removing a large volume of illicit drugs and money from our streets,” Mr Miller said.

A 34-year-old man was charged with possess methylamphetamine with intent to sell or supply, and unlawful possession.
A 22-year-old woman was charged with possess methylamphetamine with intent to sell or supply, and unlawful possession.
Both accused people were refused bail and are due to appear in the Perth Magistrate’s Court at a later date.
