ACIC delivers cutting-edge cloud-based fingerprint system

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission’s (ACIC) National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) has become the first system of its kind to be migrated to the cloud in Australia, completing the final milestone in the NAFIS NextGen Project.

NAFIS is Australia’s only national fingerprint and palmprint system, used more than 12,000 times a day by Australian law enforcement agencies across the country.

The NAFIS NextGen Project has set a new benchmark for law enforcement technology in Australia. Delivered on time and on budget over five years, in close consultation with partners and technology company IDEMIA, key benefits of the upgraded NAFIS NextGen cloud platform include:

  • increased matching effectiveness using the latest algorithms
  • increased operational efficiency for law enforcement agencies by automating processing of crime scene fingerprints
  • ability to access NAFIS from any enabled desktop
  • increased level of security
  • a cutting-edge interactive training system.

ACIC CEO Heather Cook said the completion of the NAFIS NextGen Project and migration to the cloud was key in maintaining NAFIS as an effective tool at the forefront of fingerprint identification.

“The conclusion of the NAFIS NextGen Project is testament to the hard work of our National Policing Information team and ensures that NAFIS continues to be a key tool for law enforcement agencies across Australia.”

“The cloud migration is a great outcome for our partners, with enhanced algorithms and features allowing the ACIC to scale to the needs of our partner agencies.”

“As demonstrated in a recent case in NSW, this system can help identify historical cases and is setting a new standard for fingerprint identification and information sharing,” Ms Cook said.

NAFIS plays a critical role in identifying suspects involved in serious offences such as murder, rape, armed robbery, as well as high-volume crimes like burglaries and vehicle theft.
