Previous: Concerning trends
Serious and organised crime is a global threat that causes serious harm to our national interest – penetrating and transcending borders, damaging our economy and impacting the safety and wellbeing of our people and communities. Beyond the clear and staggering economic impacts of organised crime, its consequences are corrosive and vast – we all pay the price regardless of who we are.
Year-on-year the costs of serious and organised crime continue to increase and the repercussions are increasingly felt within our communities. Australia’s highest threat criminal networks continue to evolve their operations. They rapidly adopt emerging technologies, develop favourable relationships and capability offshore, and exploit gaps in our systems and processes for profit and to further their criminal enterprise.
While the threat posed by serious and organised crime continues to evolve, the work by our intelligence, enforcement and regulatory agencies continues to have a significant impact. This national response targets key serious and organised crime actors that seek to impact Australia, while also building resilience and making Australia a more hostile environment for these groups to operate. These activities, undertaken using a coordinated, intelligence-led approach, help to keep Australia and Australians safe.
But in order to maximise this resilience, we need to take a whole of society approach to countering these threats. We as the Australian community must continue to come together – across government, industry and the community – to harden Australia against the corrosive effects of serious and organised crime. This is why we’re opening the books.
