Media statement: Criminal investigation DNA database

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) provides mission critical intelligence to combat the threats Australia faces from transnational serious and organised crime. We have an integrated view of crime, made possible through our connected systems and unique capabilities that we use to inform decision making and action with state and territory, Commonwealth and international partners to confront the threats we face.

As of 1 October 2024, the National Criminal Investigation DNA Database (NCIDD) holds 1,885,882 DNA profiles that have been uploaded by Australian police from crime scenes, convicted offenders, suspects, volunteers, items belonging to missing persons and unknown human remains. The ACIC works closely with police agencies to provide them with the intelligence they need to solve crime, even matching profiles from multiple unsolved crime scenes and linking seemingly unrelated investigations.

However, NCIDD does not contain information on who identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, nor does it measure the relatedness of people on the database. Familial matching is used only for approved specific crime scene profiles, once all other standard avenues of investigation have been exhausted.
